Quote of the Week

In the exercise of our callings, when we think we shall do no good, but all things seem contrary, yet faith says 'God has set me here; I will cast in my net at Thy commandment.' Let us look upon God and see what He commands, and then by faith cast ourselves upon Him and leave the success to God.

Richard Sibbes (1577-1635)

Faith? What about evidence?

Yes, it would be good for us all to remember that there are no coincidences, wouldn't it? It is a particularly good quote for me to read this morning. I have just returned from a week-long scientific conference and am weary of where God set me and the hurdles it currently involves, some which seem just too large to climb. I was reminded yesterday on the way home (a delayed takeoff and an hour on the tarmack when we finally arrived before we could deplane left plenty of time to read) that God is with me wherever I go, therefore I should not be weak or afraid - Joshua's instructions in Joshua 1:9.

I'm all for evidence but the wonderful thing about faith is that it ventures beyond where evidence can take us.

Ask anyone who's done anything really difficult and worthwhile, and they'll tell you that there were times when the "evidence" of progress was lacking. Yet it was the belief that they needed to press ahead that enabled them to persevere.

The sure confidence that God has called us to the work and will guide us in the task at hand is what brings confidence that it will work out for our good.

A quote from a Puritan? You don't see that too often, do you? I liked that he offers this advice: "leave the success to God." When we thing about some of our programs and strategies, and carefully analyze them, doesn't it sometimes seem like we're trying to outperform the Holy Spirit?
