"Boys, be ambitious. Be ambitious not for money or for selfish aggrandizement, not for that evanescent thing which men call fame. Be ambitious for that attainment of all that a man ought to be"

Great quote!
This is a great quote. i have wanted to comment on it all morning. i was praying with a friend this morning and we used 2 Corinthians 4:7-18 as a centering text to pray from. i had read your quote earlier and so was able to connect it to this text. so, for me if i remember "But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us", i think i can focus my ambition in right direction -- magnify God and the glorious gospel and remember i am the jar of clay
I expect that in the 1800's people in general had a better idea of what a man ought to be. We see a lot of large boys who treat their wives as a replacement for their mothers, and who are more interested in their toys than their own children.
tanya - thanks for stopping by!
jimmy - thanks for sharing the text from 2 Cor 4:7-18. It's a reminder that we're just jars of clay - nothing special - what's special about us is Christ at work in and through us.
Craver - I don't know much about how men were in the 1800s but I completely understand what you're saying about men in our society who have yet to outgrow their adolescence.
